Just read Jason Stamper’s blog on the Computer Business Review Online here on his interview with SGI’s new CEO Dennis McKenna and I am a little bit pissed off.
As he wrote earlier, after years of struggling to catch the wave in high performance computing with its Linux-based and Itanium-based Altix supercomputers, SGI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York in early May.
What bothering me was the line that read: McKenna confirmed that the OpenGL application programming interface for the development of 2D and 3D graphics applications is “considered non-core” to SGI and that he is “open to selling it”.
He is (Jason) absolutely right right here that some (Gnome) people were a little perturbed by the revelation of his report which simply read: OpenGL is up for sale!
Well Jason, me too, since I have been using OpenGL for years now. Now I wonder how OpenGL destiny is in the future.
Maybe I will create a photo album and post some screenshots of my previous work with OpenGL. Consider it a tribute! Do not expect it too much, however, since I may not actually get those shots posted.
OK, I will do it when I have time, but what is clear for me right now is that I will start looking into Direct3D more seriously while watching OpenGL evolve!
